Secrets of a Rose

In the end of a Day, a young guy finish more on work day, on a Friday in a stressful work. He leave a gray building, the girl of the ordinance gives him a “good weekend” showing all her elegance and teeth the she could show, the guy just winked and made a slight signal with his hand to her. To him, he feels free of a gray prison with computers, software and telephones ringing. To the girl of the ordinance, that was the best time of the day.
Kain, this was his name, but just a fem of people remember his name, because everybody just knows his nickname “Bolachinha” a young guy that must be 20 or 21 years old, tall but not very much, swarthy with a natural bronzed like Antonio Banderas, his black hair wasn’t shot but it wasn’t long either, his face has a different beauty, intriguing for the girls, but his brown eyes were serious and mystery.
Passing the Porto Alegre’s streets, start a little rain, he come in a red and white building, the receptionist gives him a “hi” showing a big smile and a little confuse with her works, she gives him a “good morning, but it was at 7 PM, he pass winking to her and making the same signal the she made to the girl of the ordinance, she tried to repair her mistake saying “sor… sorry, good… good evening” but Bolachinha had already passed to her.
Bolachinha down the stairs and come in a glass room, next there is a café speared by the stairs where he had fallen. The room was totally empty, he turn on the light and sit down in the same local where he always sit. The room starts to fill by the students, everybody that come greet him, the man just do a sing of positive, but the girls give him three kisses, he was a little embarrassed although the timidity isn’t in his defects.
The class was starting when he perceive coming down the stairs those three people, one was his teacher Rose, the other was a man with a GM’s jacket and also there was she… the Bolachinha perceive something different, the Rose his teacher greet the class: “Hello guys” the teacher calls the new students to come, the man must be 30 or 35 years old, he wasn’t fat, but he wasn’t thin either, then she come, before she down the stairs, the guy had paid attention in her, because she was different, she had a white skin, a black hair and for finish, beautiful green eyes.
The Rose greet her to the class, her name, nobody knows, but everybody calls her as Little Devil the teacher present her directly to Bolachinha, they play with their hands, he fills something different… the Rose just watch them, they was filling the energy of their hands finding each other, until their eyes fixed each other.
The girl was Lilith. She didn’t want change of the class, she was a little nervous and in the same time she was very anxious to know her new class, but she wanted very much continue the course with the same teacher that was very happy in see her again. Lilith was her name, but everybody calls her “Little Devil”, her teacher gave her this nickname because she consider her a girl prodigy, since she was just 13 years old. She though in doesn’t find students like him, but she was sure that… together they would be great friends.

Although he tries to keep this mystery appearance, the Bolachinha was totally logic to Little Devil. She sees him like a cool person, but very convinced, but it to her wasn’t a problem, since the humility doesn’t take a parte of theirs qualities. As soon as she saw him, she could deduce him, to someone like Little Devil who love logic things, unveil people was very fun. But with Bolachinha was a little different, she tried and could to unveil him, but she wasn’t sure about this. Bolachinha was really different and Little Devil knows it.
Although she is just 13 years old she was extremely interested in her studies, she had a motto “everything that I have is what I know”. A day she heard a sentence by a teacher and this sentence was saved in her mind: “everything that you have you can lose, the only thing that no one will take from you is what you know and you think”. She really paid attention in this sentence, because now, learn something and then, know it very is an obligation for her.
So, she wasn’t making an English course just because she liked and she loved it. But she was doing it, for she can say: “I know, I can”. It was a little arrogant, she always wanted be better and show that she was better. But as I already said, the humility wasn’t one of theirs qualities. And as it was possible to understand she was one of the best, it made a bit of rivalry between Devil and Bolacha, this rivalry wasn’t serious because all their competitions ended in a draw.
One pair so dynamic as they, it was impossible they don’t get along. The Bolachinha was having a little difficulty with something about the class, and as would be expected, he asked her if she could help him and she, of course, accepted help him. They agreed in meet in the course for she help him, they pass all week studying together and unexpectedly they completed their philosophies entirely, when one start to say, the other had already understood, after she helps her his difficulty was understood, she had some difficulty too, but after they started to study together her difficulty was understood too. Really, they were a great pair.
They were really intrigued with their teacher’s reaction referent to them together, she acted as she was sure that what would happen, in others words, she knew that they would be a great pair. The Rose was very mystery, even to the Little Devil who loved unveil people, but the Rose was very difficult to understand. She was very curious about Rose, because her favorite hobby was unveil the people and people like Rose take Devil very angry, because the girl couldn’t understand her. But Devil wasn’t the only person who think it, Bolachinha also think that Rose had many secrets that she never talk about.
One time, when they was studying and talking a little, Bolachinha told her that when Rose took his class to walk talking in other place that wasn’t the classroom, she took them to the Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana and there she stopped and start to think, but in what? Or maybe, in who? She was really difficult to understand.
Their curiosity just increased. And they had, maybe the only chance to discover something about their mystery teacher. In their last work of the course the teacher said that they would do a composition about what they want. And they together decided write about her, but for they can do it, they should research something about her.
In one week, the Bolachinha found in the internet everything about her professional life, they discovered that she has graduated in psychology and she, had a consulting office and she work with this for a long time. They fond the Rose’s ex-teachers, and the Devil go to find them and ask something about Rose, every teacher had the same reaction when Devil said her teacher’s name, all they remembered her. After she talks to three Rose’s ex-teachers, she was sure that Rose wasn’t an ordinary student, but what did she do of special? It was a great question that takes Little Devil very angry because she couldn’t answer. She returns to talk with one of her ex-teachers and she asked what Rose made to the everybody or every teacher remembers her. His answer was immediately: “there was nobody so interested in learn what I would teach like her”.
Great, now they have one answer of one question and they found other question to discover the answer. Why was she so interested in psychology? Was it possible, she just like? Maybe not, the teachers told her that she was very interested in it, so her interests weren’t of a person who just likes psychology. More one question to find the answer.
When Bolacha was searching the Rose’s teacher, he found four teachers, but Devil just talked to three, the other was found after by Bolacha, they scheduled a meeting to they talk about the Rose, together they went to UFGRS to find the teacher. They immediately start to ask about their teacher, the teacher answer them very fast and happy by to remember an industrious student like Rose. But, his face change when he tells the guys about her stage in the psychiatric hospital São Pedro. He said something about an experience that Rose would have done, but when Bolacha tries to know more something about it, he quickly changes the subject and he tells them to they forget that subject and that wasn’t important.
They are very curious, so they must to investigate it. This teacher suggested them to go to the hospital, and of course, they went. Arriving there, they asked for some photos where, probably there was the Rose photo, while they were doing it, they heard three patients talking about an intern who tried to make an experience. Bolacha and Devil though that this “intern” would be Rose, so they paid more attention in the patient’s conversation. They were saying that when they were nurse of the hospital, they couldn’t permit that she work with hypnosis with the patients and it was the reason why they were there as patients now. They just didn’t know how she made it, in other words, how she transformed them in patients. Bolachinha and Little Devil were thinking the same thing, that what they were saying was unreal. A little time after, two of them began to disagree with them own, in the half of the conversation they just said that they weren’t well and it was the reason because they were there and they weren’t sure that they were nurses of the hospital. But, of three, two though it, the other was sure that he wasn’t crazy and it wasn’t necessary he was there. After this, Bolachinha and Devil was sure that nothing what they were saying was real. While the patients were talking about what was real or not, arrived a nurse who tried to tell them that they were imaging it and they have never been nurse of that hospital, but that man who was sure that he is “normal”, he was very angry with the nurse said and he started screaming: “it is not true I don’t need be here”. He made a big confusion.
In the half of this confusion, the director who was following the guys had to leave them alone to try to calm the patient, he couldn’t do it, so he had to give him an injection. While the confusion was happing, the Little Devil stopped to see and Bolachinha, enjoying the moment, putted some documents with something about the trainees of the hospital.
While they were coming back, Bolachinha showed Little Devil the documents where there was nothing about Rose. The girl tried to explain it saying that maybe the teacher didn’t stage in that time which the book was referring.
One week after, back to the class. The teacher was serious and before the class she talked to them about their search, her face and her voice was very serious. She asked them what their interest in her life was. Probably one teacher should tell her. She was always happy and a little fun, but this time she was very different. They explained her what was happing, they told her that their work would be about her. She just called them to the class without any reaction. After the class, they talked a little about the teacher, Bolachinha though that her reaction wasn’t necessary, she was very nervous without a reason. Devil, more one time, tried to defend her teacher, she said that she had a reason, moreover they were investigating her life.
In the next week, in the course the students were arriving, Bolachinha arrived before Little Devil. Before the class they studied a little with their books. The day was normal, they seemed not to remember what happened in the last week. But their teacher remembers all that happened. She was different in class with them, in each explanation she called one of them to finish her explanations, they thought that was very strange, but both had the same justification for it, that she was calling them to help them in their studies, after all, she has made it before, but never like this, she was very different. So, they perceived the difference in their teacher, for one minute they though that she was trying to harm them, but if it was her intention, it was useless because when they were together, nothing could affect them. If one didn’t know something, the other knows and they helped each other. Together they could be able to teach about any subject
The Rose has already perceived that together they could do everything. So, she decided to test the guys’ mind, their reasoning. In each free moment, she made questions for them, but each question had something about logical reasoning. After more or less two weeks, she began to call them to play chess, she was really concentrate while Bolachinha played to Devil, she paid attention in each round and physiognomy that they did. There was no winner in the games played between Devil and Bolachinha, because sometimes Devil won and sometimes Bolachinha won, never just one won more than three times. But they have never won Rose.
They were very confused with everything that Rose was doing, her questions, her games and why was she asking them the explanation about the class? After all this, Rose asked them if they wanted teach with her in a class of the first level, that class really had difficulty about English. They just accept. For them, review everything again would be very well.
In all classes the teacher asked them many things, but she made it in silence, she asked something just looking them and sometimes she made a slight movement with her head, they could understand her just looking. For them, everybody perceive and understand her signals, actually nobody understood just them. On the third class they perceived that just they understood the Rose, even she isn’t saying anything, but they didn’t give much importance to this.
They were making their work when they decided talk about how was she in the class. They wrote about her signals which she gave them in that class where they were teaching. They began to pay more attention in her, even in their class. In this moment they perceived that she had a great influence with her students. Nobody disagreed her.
Everything was very confuse for them, they still wanted to write about her, but they couldn’t write something real about her, because they didn’t have many real things about her. So they decided ask her. In one of their free moments, they asked her something about her professional life, Rose didn’t want answer them, but they insisted until she suggested a game of riddles, and she said that she would give all answers in the class, but it wouldn’t be easy because all answers would be a little abstract.
In the next day when Rose would say everything to them, the teacher arrived a little late, but just five minutes. The class started normally until Devil remembers what Rose has said before, she called Bolachinha and told him softly: “we have to pay more attention in her today”. The teacher perceived that Devil was remembering him what she has said. “Ok, now we can start” the teacher said referring to the class, or not, Devil and Bolachinha perceived that actually, their game was starting.
In the beginning of the class, Rose called a student and asked him if he wanted write an example for the guys, he said that he couldn’t do because he was very tired and he asked Rose to call other student. She looked at him with other physiognomy, her face wasn’t serious, and her voice either, she was just a little different. She repeated the request looking direct at him, and he, just stand up and made the activity. Immediately Bolachinha remembered that his first question to Rose was if she used hypnosis with her students, or other thing to convince them. One answer they have. Bolachinha and Devil looked to each other a little scared, the Rose looked them with a small smile in her face, as she knew that they understood the first answer. She repeated it others times in the class, and they understood all, or they thought it.
After the class, they come back to their houses and they thought very much in everything that was happing. For Little Devil the questions without answers were like a mental torture, because she has never passed a long of time without answers as now. As I said before, unveil people was a hobby to her. But for Bolachinha was different, he wanted to know, but sometimes he though that he knew all answers, he just couldn’t convince himself. After one week thinking in all this, Bolachinha called Little Devil and asked her if she could go to the course a little time before the class and she agreed. They arrived together and meet each other in front of the course. They shook and come in the course, they sat in front of the café, that was next their classroom, and they started to talk about what was happing. Between the conversations they perceived that they had all answers, they just didn’t perceive yet.
Between the conversation, both remembered many things that they have discovered in that search, on thing was the conversation between that three patients of the psychiatric hospital São Pedro, they was thinking the same thing again, that they really were talking about the true, but Devil and Bolachinha were very confuse yet, trey were afraid of committing a injustice with Rose. They were really thinking the same thing, but they were just thinking until Bolachinha try to tell her what he was thinking, but when he said the name of the hospital, the girl lifts her head very fast and scared, as she has seen ghost. She was gagging when she tried to explain him, Bolachinha was a little scared with her reaction, and gagging yet she said: “she sa… she said, she tol… she told us, she told us everything”. Bolachinha didn’t understand anything, so he tried to calm her, and then Devil tried to explain again. She said that in the end of the class, Rose gave an example to the class when she should use a local and she used the hospital. Devil was sure that was more one Rose’s signal, but in that time she didn’t perceive. Bolachinha was still confused when he told her that he didn’t remember that example, and because that, he still was in doubt. Devil was sure that was a signal that Rose gave them, but she couldn’t convince herself.
This situation was really difficult, questions, games, classes. They were really confuse with everything that was happing, until Devil have a great idea, she asked Bolachinha if he wanted play chess with Rose again, but this time, they would play together and the Devil’s intention was make questions for Rose while they play with her.
He accepted, he though that her idea was very interesting, because now, they would use their mind together against the person who was teaching everything to them, but this time she would be in the other side of the game board.
The pair was with the white pieces and Rose, obviously with the black pieces. Bolachinha start the game, moving their knight of the right, doing the L for the tip of the game board, Bolachinha ask Rose what’s the difference between psychoanalyzed and psychology… she just move her pawn in front of her left knight to the front, and answer that the difference was that the psychoanalyzed help the people to find the answers by themselves, because the people always have the answers for their questions, because they just make questions for the answers that they have but they don’t perceive, so this is the work of an analyst, guide people to answer their own questions. Both pay attention in what she was saying, Bolachinha come back to the game moving the pawn that was in front of the king. And Rose start to say again that the psychologists usually give the answers of their patients, the answers usually be very simple, but sometimes the simple and easy are very confuse and difficult to understand for some people. She moves her right knight to the center of the game board… and Devil do the next movement, she moves her queen to the third line in the same line of the knight. Now Rose puts her knight in defense, she moves her knight to the center of the game board, now the two knights were in the same line separated by an empty square. Bolachinha made a small smile, because in the first time he is playing with someone that don’t transmit emotions, Rose always has the same physiognomy serene, calm and cheerful. Bolachinha and Devil perceive that Rose just look to the game board and in the same time she pays attention in them. Bolachinha makes another question, if she believes in hypnosis... with a small smile he plays with the queen, he puts the white queen in the penultimate home. Both watch her and she continue with that calm face and answer, the hypnoses is very different than what you have been saying until now, the hypnoses is different than psychoanalyzed and psychology, in the hypnoses someone (the hypnotist) command other person, the hypnotist don’t give advices but orders, and then the person woke up with the estrous fingers, so she estrous.
After she estrous her fingers, she moves her pawn two homes to the front of the rooks. And she continue saying, she says that the kids are simpler to hypnotize, because their mind are more accessible. Devil plays, she puts the pawn that was in front of the king one home to front and ask Rose, she said that the teacher didn’t answer the Bolachinha’s question if Rose believe of not in hypnoses and not how the hypnoses works, Rose change her physiognomy as she liked the Devil’s question, and answer saying that she believes if the person want it. Bolachinha is curious and he ask: “what is the difference between hypnoses and induction, and Rose smile again, throw her hair to behind, move her black pawn to the front of the right rook just one home to the front, then she was calm yet. As she was in a hot bath in the half of the winter. She answers that in the hypnoses the person should devote himself entirely, because this person is just a puppet in the hands of the hypnotist.
The game is happing yet, the pieces begin to disappear of the board, that expression in Rose’s face isn’t the same that was before. Bolachinha make another question, if she has ever done it with some student. “So what is a teacher and analyst that permit her students find the answers by themselves, no matter with the time witch they spend?” Bolachinha asked, breath and continued: “a psychologist who answers the obvious whenever I felt the insecurity and fear of failure, a hypnotist who makes his students submit an illusory life is always dependent on the commands of that person or a person who only induces its students without letting them realize taking them autonomy and free will of the student, always being tricked into a false learning?” Rose watches them with a tired face as she was surprised with his question. She wasn’t sure what to say, she really didn’t know and in the first time she stops to look to the game board… thinks, look at them, makes a movement with one peace, but now, she wasn’t paying attention in the game, she was without words and suddenly she gets tense, looks at them and tried to answer that a teacher must take care their student, because a teacher is the person who help someone to find his destination, this was the teacher’s goal and it doesn’t matter how the teacher do it.
Devil says again that Rose didn’t answer Bolachinha’s question, if she has ever done it with some student and makes another movement with her white queen on the game board. Now, Rose really wasn’t paying attention in the game, she just stops, she didn’t know what do, maybe she was looking for an answer in her mind, but she fond nothing, she really didn’t know what do or say. Bolachinha says that in the first time, he can see his teacher without an answer. Rose lowers her head and continues in silence as she has been without senses. And she says: “if you are asking me it now, it is because you know the answer. What is better? Guide someone to a best life or permit this person lives unhappy?”
Bolachinha change his physiognomy, he is very serious now so different as Devil and Rose have never seen before and he says: “who are you to say what is right or wrong to the others?” She answers saying that her goal is help her students to find a help life, guide her students to far from the pain and it doesn’t matter who she do it, maybe with the induction… Bolachinha continues very serious and says that nobody can take away the freedom of the others, no matter the reason, each one have their lives, their pain, happiness, hatred, shucks, love take a part of the lives and each one should make what they want… Rose repeated that the people don’t know be happy alone, they repent of everything, their conscience are their own torture… then, she makes a movement with her pawn as she was playing for obligation.
Devil was very angry when she made the next movement, Bolachinha has never seen her like this before. She movement her white peace and say: “so, everything is true… I’m sorry, it is a checkmate”. She makes the movement dropping the black king and as if Rose fell with the peace…

Saturday, it is almost 11 AM, Bolachinha wakes up as he has slept for moths. It was very cold, so he wears a coat, and then he leaves his bedroom and goes to the bathroom for he takes a shower. His breakfast, obviously, he would eat after. The shower dumps the hot water on him who could feel the water vapor. He leaves the bathroom, drying his hair witch wasn’t short, but it wasn’t long too. He takes his coffee witch was done in the moment, he puts sugar and goes to the living room where his brother were. He asks his brother if he could lower the volume that has waken up him, his brother lowers the TV’s volume, and Bolachinha sits on the sofa next to his brother, with his coffee. His brother tells Bolachinha that he wanted understand what was written in that message in English… Bolachinha look at the TV and… understand? Yes, he understood everything that was written in that massage. He didn’t perceive that he was understanding and telling his brother everything. His brother asks him how he could understand if he didn’t know English and give him a paper and a pen that was in a table, asks Bolachinha if he could read it, he translated to his brother who repeat the question: “how can you understand it?”. In this moment, Bolachinha perceives what was happing and he found other propagandas that he could understand, he was surprised. But he was late too, he picks up his backpack and starts to run for he doesn’t lose the bus.
In somewhere, a little girl wakes up, looks at the mirror and decide go to the bathroom to take a shower. Her mother calls her to a coffee late, she leaves the bathroom very fast. Her mother was singing a Rita Lee’s music, so she eats something and decides turn on the radio because her mother wasn’t a great singer.
She turns on the radio, her mother likes the music that was New York of Frank Sinatra. Her mother tells the girl that she would like to understand that music. That girl was Little Devil and she understood the music and translated all music to her mother. Her mother was like the Bolachinha’s brother was, scared. The girl didn’t perceive yet that she understood everything until she look at her mother who was really scared, just paying attention in her… her mother made the same question that Bolachinhas’s brother made: “how do you know it?” Devil didn’t answer because she didn’t know, now was playing another music, Californication of Red Hod Chili Pepers, her mother puts her cup on the sink. But Devil was there, scared, because she was understanding all music. Her mother looks at the clock and remembers Devil that she was late, so she finishes her “Nescau” since the coffee wasn’t her favorite drink, picks up her red backpack and says: “bye mom!”
She arrived on the bus station on time and went to the Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana to meet her friends. In the Center was very cold and the sky was gray, she was walking on the Porto Alegre’s streets approaching her goal. She arrives on the Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana, meet some friends and come in… she goes up by elevator until the third floor where the others were.
They start to talk about many things, she is bored with the subject, she disappears in front of them and goes to a local called Jardins de Quintana, she hasn’t perceived that local yet, she came in and sees a guy who was sat lazily… he closes his book and stands up, he was tall but not very much, between they there was a big flower pot with many red and white roses, she passes for him that was turned, saving his book. She stays in the corner of the floor and looks down because she always liked tall. The guy down the stairs with his backpack in his back and goes to his goal. She that was looking down turns, but the guy wasn’t there yet. Devil’s friend called her to go see some boots in the Palazo, she accepted and the two leave the Mario Quintana building.
The guy passes in front of the place witch he calls prison. He begins to walk more fast, because he had a compromise in the Tevah store, he passes in front of a red and white building, walks more some meters and arrives in the store. A nice sr. attend him, so it is not the first time when he buys in that store, all his blazers was done custom-made, he chooses his favorite and says that he will take in the next Monday. An attendant just gives a “hi” with many “i”, he just winks to her and when he leaves the store he sees a woman, he couldn’t identify her, he just felt a smell of mint, he turns and watches the woman with a black overcoat who was disappearing on the Alberto Bins.
He walks more a little watching the woman with a black overcoat disappearing of the street, when he turns, he touch in a girl that dropped her bags of the Palazo. He helps her to take her bags and the girl calls her friend, Lilith, she turns and their eyes fixed each other again. He didn’t know how, but he has seen these green eyes before with this different contrast as he was having a “De Javú” and she with the same sensation just watched him as she was remembering that together, they have been great friends.
She was very confused when she asked: “Do you know Rose?” and now understanding better the situation and with a serious physiognomy, he answered: “Checkmate”.
